The bags of this summer, next summer, and all summers to come.

With the bank holiday looming, it’s time to get your last-minute summer bag order in. This year, for every year preceding this year, and (we think) for every year to come, the must-have summer accessory is a basket bag.

Oozing the chic, off-duty appeal that we all want from our summer wardrobes, the basket bag – which has recently been updated to include woven bags – is the accessory that will never go out of style. Once regarded a beach trip necessity, the piece has since become a mainstay of city and country edits alike, proving the staying power of the wicker.

The bag’s most enduring style moment came in the 1970’s, when Jane Birkin made a picnic basket her signature accessory when she was out and about in cities such as London and Cannes. Thanks to brands such as JW Anderson, Jacquemus and Loewe’s collaboration with Paula’s Boutique, raffia bags are back and stronger than ever this year. These cool, often leather trimmed iterations are decidedly less summery than their predecessors, meaning that just because you may not be going on holiday this year doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get a basket bag. Why not lean into Jane Birkin’s Parisian insouciance by styling yours with dark mom jeans and an oversized white shirt? That’s some serious je nais se quois.
