The infamous new DC game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had a new trailer showcasing everything to come in the next instalment in the game series by Rocksteady, it is to be nine years since their last 2015 title, Batman: Arkham Knight. Despite this large development time, the game’s trailer has not been well received as gamers and fans have been vocally sceptical about it, let's talk about why.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is an action shooter set years after the events of the previous game. Task Force X or more commonly known as The Suicide Squad, is comprised of four of the Arkham Asylum inmates: Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn, Digger Harkness / Captain Boomerang, Floyd Lawton / Deadshot and Nanaue / King Shark. Their main objective in this game is to fight the Justice League and kill them (hence the name) and the brainwashing alien invader Brainiac, although that has been proven to be a difficult task. They must navigate Metropolis and fight the Justice League who have been turned into the not-so-good guys that they are mostly known as, under the strict direction of Amanda Waller - the leader and creator of The Suicide Squad to save Metropolis and the world.

From the trailer we get a glimpse into the gameplay as well as a good look at the vibrant world in which it is set. This open world is shown off well with a really well made trailer, although the actual boss fights do look lacklustre. Definitely different from other Rocksteady games, this new feeling has caused worry amongst the fans who fear it will be lacking the other great attributes that Rocksteady have been known for in the past: like their gripping storytelling and unique game mechanics. Luckily, we will get to play with many different weapons to keep gameplay fresh and not so repetitive in addition to new means of traversal and mobility, providing them a broader range than what they are known for.

Criticisms have been levied against the game due to its live service model, meaning that there will be regular updates, sometimes for free and other times paid which raises concern because it may result in the game being compromised for the sake of profit. The argument is that the impact from what would otherwise be an epic story will be diluted in order to fit into a long-term strategy. However, this can be seen as a great thing as there could be lots of new story missions and characters implemented into the game after launch. Not all is bad, the graphics look incredible paired with its impressive use of lighting, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League looks to be hours of fun whether you play it solo or multiplayer with friends.

Unfortunately, this title will see our last appearance of the late Kevin Conroy as Batman who passed away in 2022, known for his work across many mediums, including his iconic work on the Batman games and throughout several animated series, he will be truly missed by millions for his work.

If you'd like to give it a try, it will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on 2nd February 2024.
