The 70s Called…They Want Their Style Back

Published

Between the recent SS21 collections showing a love for the trends of the decade and Jenna Coleman’s outfits in the BBC drama The Serpent, it’s clear that we just can’t get enough of the 70’s fashion trend.

Often, when we think about fashions of the past, there is one style that immediately stands out as that style of the decade, the one you see and immediately know the era that it was en vogue. The 70’s, however, saw a lot of sartorial freedom; bohemian looks were still going strong from the hippie movement of the 60’s, and the masculine tailoring that defined the 80’s was starting to appear on the backs of Bianca Jagger and Catherine Deneuve.

The decade was sun-kissed with shades of brown and burnt orange alongside paisleys, platforms, denim, and thick headbands. Florals from the decade before were mixed with tailored trousers, waistcoats and flared denim to create looks that are still enviable today.

Victoria Beckham’s SS21 collection recalls the loose and powerful tailoring of the 70’s complete with a mannish, Mick Jagger twist. She even included jeans in the collection (a first for the designer’s ready-to-wear line), proving the power of good denim. Other honorary members of the resurgence of the 70’s club are Alessandro Michele’s recent Gucci collections, Hedi Slimane’s Celine, Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s Chloé, and Harry Styles.

For your 70’s look to really come together, think about layering and clashing patterns. Where Coco Chanel once said that you should take one item off before you leave your house, the 70’s style icons would laugh and tell you to add another layer: a waistcoat perhaps, or some funky socks? Oh, and don’t ever leave the house without a platform shoe!
